Second Language Phonological Acquisition

Collaboration

My main research interests concern the acquisition of English by Brazilian Portuguese learners, with an emphasis on formal grammar models such as Optimality Theory and Harmonic Grammar. The research studies I have carried out at Dinafon aim to discuss the acquisition of a second language gestural system under a formal grammar model. The formal account proposed not only gives rise to a reflection on the acquisition of an L2 gestural system, but it also sheds light on the debate concerning the nature of the formalization of the gestural unit in constraint-based approaches to grammar.

Profile

I am a full-time professor at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. I obtained my PhD in Applied Linguistics from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul in 2008, and have worked as an EFL instructor for more than twelve years, having advised graduate students on the fields of phonological theory, L2 phonological acquisition and L2 pronunciation teaching. I am particularly interested in the field of second language acquisition, mainly in the acquisition of English phonology by Brazilian Portuguese speakers.

Dinafon stands for Dinâmica Fônica, i.e., speech dynamics, and expresses the research interests of a group of phonologists/phoneticians directed by Eleonora Albano.
