Most Dinafon researchers are from two Brazilian states where the study of speech sounds has deep and solid roots: São Paulo (SP) and Rio Grande do Sul (RS).
The SP members are affiliated to Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), Universidade de São Paulo (USP), and Universidade Estadual Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP).
The RS members are affiliated to Universidade Católica de Pelotas (UCPel), Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel), and Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
There are also members from Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT) and from Universidade Federal do Acre (UFAC).
Their backgrounds include not only linguistics, but also psychology, speech therapy and musicology.
The work of the group has been funded by Brazilian federal as well as state research funding agencies (respectively: CNPq and CAPES; FAPESP and FAPERGS).

Dinafon stands for Dinâmica Fônica, i.e., speech dynamics, and expresses the research interests of a group of phonologists/phoneticians directed by Eleonora Albano.
